Somos: The Language of Dance
Produced by: Thalia Doe, Katie Forbus, and Stephanie Robledo
The 2020 Census shows that Wichita Falls’ population includes 22 percent who are Hispanic. But, for a variety of reasons, many of the Falls’ Hispanic businesses have closed during the past year, diminishing the Hispanic community’s impact on the city. Even so, Wichita Falls Hispanics continue to keep their culture alive and vibrant. The Zavala International Dance group is part of that culture, bringing traditional folk dances from the Baile Folklórico to the Falls. Representing four of the 32 regions of Mexico, Zavala performs during Hispanic Heritage Month and Day of the Dead festivities, providing a gateway for the Hispanic community – and Wichita Falls – to remain connected to its Latino roots.
The Greater Good?
Produced by: Daniel Antillon, Emily Copeland, Alex Sinks and Cecil Witherspoon
The city of Wichita Falls has long promoted Lake Ringgold as a lasting solution to potential water shortages in the region. However, efforts to initiate construction have hit a roadblock as 25 ranching families, who would face complete or partial displacement due to the proposed reservoir, have firmly opposed the project to safeguard their properties. They argue that their deep-rooted connection to the land and skepticism about Ringgold’s efficacy as a solution to the city’s issues justify their stance. This conflict has sparked debate as city authorities push ahead with what they believe is the most effective path to secure the city’s future. We encourage you to weigh both perspectives and form your own conclusion: which serves the greater good?
